    The Teacher

    Leaning Hard on Thee

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day yesterday, October 5, today’s devotional explores what it is to be a teacher while learning from the best teacher there is – God. As a blog flowing from the traditional of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which is devoted to critical thinking and engaging our faith while mindful of Biblical, Historical, and Scientific truths, we are grateful to all teachers, educators, and instructors who help to grow young minds and we appreciate the hard, at times thankless, work they do.

May this post bring with it gratitude for all teachers, especially those who model love for all mankind and the pursuit of the Truth. And may it make us all cognizant of our continued learning from the one who teaches us all.

    Rabbi (which means Teacher)

The next day John was back at his post with two disciples, who were watching. He looked up, saw Jesus walking nearby, and said, “Here he is, God’s Passover Lamb.”
The two disciples heard him and went after Jesus. Jesus looked over his shoulder and said to them, “What are you after?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
He replied, “Come along and see for yourself.”
They came, saw where he was living, and ended up staying with him for the day.

    The Teacher

Lord, who am I to teach the way
To little children day by day,
So prone myself to go astray?

I teach them KNOWLEDGE, but I know
How faint they flicker and how low
The candles of my knowledge glow.

I teach them POWER to will and do,
But only now to learn anew
My own great weakness through and through.

I teach them LOVE for all mankind
And all God’s creatures, but I find
My love comes lagging far behind.

Lord, if their guide I still must be,
Oh let the little children see
The teacher leaning hard on Thee

    A Blessing for Your Week

    Beloved of God,
    May you learn.
May you find the Good Teacher
And follow Him where He leads
    May you understand the Truth
And share it as opportunity allows you
May you discover the power of your own will
    And, equipped with that awareness,
    Empower those around you

    May you learn to love
    May you love
    May you learn
    May you teach,
    And May you learn.

    Amen.
